April 2 1992. Reality rewrote the rules.
The official name for it was
Cantionis Terra,
'The Enchantment of the World.' Most people simply called it The
Warp. All over the world, all at once, things changed.
Mountain ranges rose, crevasses opened, oceans rose or fell. No
earthquakes, no meteors, no bombs. All of a sudden, the land was
just
different.
And that wasn't the worst part.
Cities and people changed too. Family, friends, and neighbors
became creatures from legend. Ogres, elves, centaurs, and more.
Cities twisted, becoming fantastic versions of themselves.
Monsters prowled wilderness which had been lands long-tamed, while the
sky darkened with leathery wings.
Then
it stopped, just as suddenly as it had begun. Parts of the world
were left untouched, but most of it was unrecognizable. The Warp
itself lasted less than forty-eight hours. The chaos which raged in its
wake took years to sort out. Security and convenience which had been
taken for granted became matters of personal responsibility. A man’s
home might be his castle, but only if he could defend it.
A
decade has passed. Earth has survived and adapted. New
technologies continue to change the world, but at least now the rules
are understood.
Except now, we are discovering that we are not alone. In fact, we
haven't been alone for many years... |
